Mary Budden Estate

Binsar sanctuary, himalayas, india

Amidst the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary within the mystical Kumaon, Malini gave a 130 year-old cottage an ethereal lift. Mary Budden Estate is a sophisticated and endearing cocoon that invites you to sink in after long mountain treks. The extensive use of local stone, solid pinewood vaulted ceilings and floors, and vanity counters made in-situ, creates a chalet in the mountains. The warm glow of the bukharis (fire stoves) reflects the earthy tones of the walls and fabrics, charming with their vibrant interplay of light, shade and texture.

A collection of carefully selected antique kilims from the Shiraz and Quashgai regions and rugs from Tibet are used throughout, setting the colour palette of both cottages with a common thread of grey stone, rich pinewood floors and skylights.

Malini stresses the importance of creating interiors that are timeless, to provide flexibility in designed spaces especially a home-stay.
